His path led him from his beginnings at the University of Erlangen, with further stations in Würzburg, Zurich, London, and Boston, to the top of the University Hospital Zurich, which he directed for many years and raised to international prominence.
Alongside his clinical practice, he shaped research with groundbreaking contributions to reconstructive surgery, the treatment of cleft lip and palate, and innovative biomaterial-based techniques in bone regeneration.
Beyond this, he shared his expertise worldwide: as a visiting professor at prestigious universities, as an advisor to international professional societies, and as a mentor to an entire generation of surgeons.
His name is synonymous with medical innovation, scientific progress, and a medical approach that always puts people first.
Hermann F. Sailer, born in 1943, studied medicine and dentistry at the University of Erlangen, earning doctorates in both fields with distinction.
From early on, he dedicated himself to the complex anatomical and functional challenges of the face. His further training took him to the Department of Trauma Surgery at the University of Würzburg, the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Zurich, as well as research stays in London and Boston.
In 1987, he was appointed Full Professor and Medical Director of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Zurich, which he led until 2001, developing it into an internationally renowned center for research, teaching, and patient care.
Following this, he founded the Professor Sailer Clinic in Zurich, which he built into a leading institution of modern maxillofacial surgery through innovative treatment methods and an interdisciplinary approach.
Prof. Hermann F. Sailer is the author of 247 scientific publications and the recipient of numerous honorary doctorates. His research has focused on key questions of reconstructive and aesthetic-functional facial surgery.
Particular areas of emphasis have included the treatment of cleft lip and palate and craniofacial anomalies, advances in reconstruction following tumors and trauma, as well as implantology in cases of atrophic maxilla.
Another major focus was on biomaterials in bone regeneration – especially the use of bone morphogenetic proteins and resorbable osteosynthesis materials – as well as reconstructions using lyophilized human membrane such as cartilage and bone.
He also gained international recognition for his methods in treating obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and for developing the “Anteface” theory, which defines a new standard of beauty in our time.
His scientific contributions have been incorporated into international guidelines and continue to shape medical practice worldwide.
Prof. Sailer served as a visiting professor at leading institutions in Europe, Asia, and the United States. His expertise earned him honorary memberships in numerous international professional societies.
